En Mayo de 1991 tuvo lugar La primera reunión que Ted Turner atendió con el grupo que hacíamos TNT Latin America y preparábamos el lanzamiento de Cartoon Network, fue algo que nos permitió entender sus conceptos que ayudaron a “globalizar” a la humanidad y a que él mismo se autonombrara ciudadano del mundo.
La sencilla forma de ser del multimillonario, Ted Turner, nos permitió a todos en esa mesa -(Charlotte Leonard Engel; Luis Estrada; Flavio Ortega; Dena Krupinsky; Clara Durango; Gabriela Guerrero; Rick Pérez; (Betty Riera Laskoe, estuvo ausente por salud pero se le informo); Alex DeSousa; Cindy Kerr; Francisco Duran Rosillo)- visualizar que si con CNN logro unir al mundo haciendo de este el primer canal de noticias de audiencia global, los canales de entretenimiento debían tener la misma perspectiva.
Ted Turner en aquella Reunión nos dejo bien claro que la audiencia del mundo debía informarse y entretenerse por medio de los canales de Turner Broadcasting System. Era el año 1991, las librerías de Hanna Barbera habían sido compradas con derechos exclusivos y a perpetuidad por la empresa. Ted Turner dejaba que CNN entrara como señal abierta en Cuba, para competir con la señal oficialista de TV Martí. Luego de explicarnos lo anterior, Ted Turner le cuestiono a Charlotte Leonard, que quien era de Cuba en esa reunión. A lo que Charlotte le contesto que Beatriz Riera Laskoe, gerente de programación, era nacida en Cuba, pero por razones de salud estuvo ausente.

La reunión continuo discutiendo ratings, contenido y planes futuros. Ted Turner positivo con sus bromas nos hablaba de las Películas de Producción Original Turner y de que ya Robert Duval le había llamado para hacer el plan de trabajar en alguna de contenido histórico, y el plan se consolido en el año 2000 cuando produjo Gods and Generals, que salió a los cines en el 2003. También nos hizo mucho hincapié en que estaba trabajando como productor ejecutivo para el proyecto, Capitan Planet and the Planetiers, o Capitán Planeta y los Planetoides, serie dedicada a crear conciencia entre las nuevas generaciones sobre cómo cuidar el planeta y evitar abusos en el consumo de energía no renovable.
Ted Turner tomaba muy a pecho lo que planeaba para sus canales de Televisión, en aquella reunión llego en un Toyota Corola 4 cilindros estándar, y usaba Toyota, porque fue la primera marca que se anuncio en el primero de sus canales: TBS. Pero además lo hacía por el bajo consumo de gasolina que tales carros generan.
La reunión duro una hora, y al grano nos resumió que ese pequeño grupo le iba a entregar el nuevo canal de Cartoon Network, tal como estábamos produciendo TNT Latin America. Así fue lanzamos el canal usando los promos producidos para Cartoon Network Domestico el audio se doblo al español pero usando todos los mismos elementos gráficos. Solo los “end page” o graficas de página final que anunciaban los horarios y territorios se tradujeron al español.
En Septiembre 23 de 1995, Turner Broadcasting System fue adquirida por Time Warner, vale la pena destacar que un año antes Ted Turner había estado en los nuevos edificios construidos detrás de la mansión del 1050 Techwood Drive (este lugar fue conocido en Atlanta como Atlanta Progressive Club y era donde la comunidad judía se reunía) y al iniciar la reunión con todos los empleados de todos los canales, éramos casi 7 mil, la reunión era televisada en circuito cerrado para aquellos que no la podían atender por razones de trabajo; y Ted Turner inicia diciendo vamos a hablar de negocios, pero en las preguntas nadie me debe cuestionar sobre la mejoría de sueldos, porque acabo de pasar por el estacionamiento y acabo de ver carros mas nuevos que el mío. También entre broma y broma hablo del crecimiento de la empresa, y que si en latin america llegábamos a 10 millones de casas, en el mundo ya era casi 10 veces esa cantidad.
Pero la boca salvaje del sureño, soltó algo que nos alarmo a todos, e incluso, Allan DeNiro de Recursos Humanos paso un memo prohibiendo que se comentara sobre el incidente y que si hubo alguien que hubiese grabado la reunión la entregara a Operaciones y Recursos Humanos. Y es que Ted Turner ofreció una recompensa de 10 mil dólares a los ahí presentes a quien fuera y matara a Ruphert Murdock el dueño de la cada Fox News Televisión. Ya en ocasiones anteriores Ted Turner había hecho pública la rivalidad con su competidor y también había lanzado ataques ofensivos. En otra ocasión dijo que retaba a una pelea de box a Murdock y que todas las utilidades se le dieran a la gente pobre.
A Ted Turner no le gustaba perder y pese a que sus canales estaban briosos en el aire con la mejor audiencia, el fundador ya tenía un presagio que le hacía atacar a su competidor más fuerte, Ruphert Murdock.
Cuando se consolida la operación con Time Warner ese 23 de septiembre de 1995, Ted Turner estaba feliz había no solo recuperado su inversión sino que había multiplicado su capital, e invirtió en su pasión, comprar ranchos, que lo ha hecho el acreedor de mayores espacios territoriales en Kansas, Montana, Nebraska con un total de 15 ranchos, en los estados Unidos, con un área total de 940 millas cuadradas (unos 2400 kilómetros), y en la Argentina otro rancho que lo tipifica entre los principales dueños de terreno en ese país.
Ted Turner el personaje es el adorador de la naturaleza combinado con la pasión por las mujeres, es un secreto a voces que cuando lanzo CNN en la Mansión de Techwood, Ted Turner vivía en ese edificio y cada mañana bajaba tomar su café al estudio para ver la transmisión de noticias, pero lo hacía de una manera muy peculiar, en bata y sin calzones. El hecho fue tan famoso que cuando se celebraron los 20 Anos de CNN, Dan Darling, el Vicepresidente de Turner Estudios, le regalo una bata durante la ceremonia a la que acudieron todos los empleados y se amenizo con un show con Diana Rose, (inicialmente estaba programado el británico, Rod Stwart pero tuvo una operación en la garganta días antes).
El evento fue majestuoso en la recién ignaurada Phillips Arena, se pasaron muchos videos del plan y lanzamiento del Canal Mundial de Noticias CNN, se paso el video del casting del tag line: “THIS IS CNN” que el único que lo pudo hacer bien fue el actor James Earl Jones, el único que pudo repetir el tag line, con la pronunciación debida, y de hecho fue el talento que quedo al aire, pero lo curioso es que durante la ceremonia pasaron un video de todos, incluidos Ted Turner, su gran amigo Terry McGuirk; usaron los mejores talentos de voz en el casting, y nadie pudo decir: “THIS IS CNN” mejor que el actor, que el actor James Earl Jones.
Se recordó el día Agosto 2 de 1990, cuando los tres talentosos 3 reporteros que cubrieron el primer bombardeo a Irak en vivo, Peter Arnett, John Holliman, y Bernard Shaw, este ultimo un veterano reportero de ABC, a quien tuve el gusto de conocer en la Guerra de El Salvador y luego del destino nos re encontró en Turner Broadcasting System. De hecho para una serie de documentales yo doble su voz al español. También se hizo un homenaje a John Holliman, quien empezó cubriendo temas de agricultura para CNN y luego se especializo en cubrir temas de la NASA. Ese día todos los recordamos a John Holliman como el periodista que entregado a su profesión dedico toda su vida a las noticias, paso meses en varias ocasiones cubriendo la guerra de Iraq, y vino a fallecer en un choque automovilístico en el condado de Gwinett, Georgia a unas millas de su casa.
Ted Turner en varias ocasiones nos recordó la fuerte discusión que tuvo con su gran amigo y cercano colaborador, Terry McGuirk, quien pago 750 mil dólares por la casona de lo que era el “Atlanta Progresive Club”, de la comunidad judía, y el punto era que la casona tiene mucho terreno alrededor, bueno esto fue justo lo que necesitaba la empresa para su crecimiento, actualmente el 1050 Techwood Drive, se expandió con 11 edificios adicionales, estacionamiento subterráneo y terreno para las antenas satelitales. O sea que si Terry McGuirk no hubiese cometido tal error, Ted Turner no hubiera tenido suficiente espacio para crecer.
El 20 Aniversario de CNN fortaleció a Ted Turner, que luego de haber adquirido New Line Cinema, Castle Rock y hacer la televisora mas solida de los 80’s y 90’s, la vendió a Time Warner en el momento indicado.
Cuando se ejecuto la operación pusieron en los pasillos letreros como el que sale al final de las caricaturas: “Thats All Folks”, cuyo mensaje iba dirigido a las personas que trabajaban en departamentos que iban a quedar duplicados, porque Time Warner ya los tenia, a todos se les trato muy bien y se les pago sueldo por los siguientes 5 anos, con beneficios, y la opción de volver a otro departamento de la empresa.
Ted Turner en las 5 ocasiones que lo trate reuniones y eventos que lo vi, siempre tuvo una sonrisa, “para mi amigo mexicano”, hablamos de caballos, pues en mi familia todos montan a caballo, le hable del Alazan Rosillo, y quedo fascinado cuando le dije que mi hermana era la pintora de los caballos de la casa Pedro Domeq, y las historias de “El Chiclanero” aquel caballo blanco que usaban en los comerciales que la cola le arrastraba.
Ted Turner sabe llegar a la gente con una sonrisa, con simples detalles, siempre defiende su postura de decir que es ciudadano del mundo, y a Ted Turner le debemos que la televisión este globalizada en gran parte.

In May 1991, The first meeting took place, Ted Turner attended and lead the group that did TNT Latin America and preparing the launch of Cartoon Network, was something that enabled us to understand the concepts that helped to "globalize" to mankind and that he himself styled himself a citizen of the world.The simple way to be the billionaire, Ted Turner, we allowed everyone at the table -  August 2, 1990, when three talented three reporters who covered live the first bombing of Iraq , Peter Arnett, John Holliman and Bernard Shaw, the latter a veteran ABC reporter, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in El Salvador and then  we found in Turner Broadcasting System years later. In fact, for a documentary series I did the voice into Spanish for Bernard Shaw.
